The estate guides will take you on a captivating step back into history. Fond Doux has retained the character of the early French colonial estate and estate houses. As one of the earliest estates established by the French on the lands granted by Royal decrees of 1745 and 1763, the estate and its surroundings lands spread out from the hills of Bellefond to the east, and rise to the Chateau Belair hills to the west at quite high elevations above sea level.
The resort is situated amongst lush cocoa groves, guests can not only smell chocolate wafting by on warm breezes, but can also actively engage in the processing of chocolate if they wish – from Cocoa Harvesting, Cocoa Drying to the famous Cocoa Dancing. Who doesn’t love chocolate?
Enjoy the beauty and sultry warmth of the tropics whilst your tour guide walks you through lush fertile vegetation and marvel at the diverse range of organic fruit trees, tropical flowers, plant life, vegetables and local spices. Flowers are abundant on the trails – see Red Torch Gingers stand proud reaching out for the sun. Ornamental bananas, Heliconia, Croton, Hibiscus, Begonia and Ixora are very common throughout the plantation. Many medicinal plants can be found around the estate. Recipes for herbal traditional medicines have been passed down through generations and many still use them today.
Be prepared for an unforgettable authentic natural experience – sample and enjoy organic fruits such as bananas, mangoes, apricots, grapefruits, love apples, guavas, star fruits, jungle M&M’s (Cocoa Beans) and refreshing jelly coconuts hand-picked by the “Fond Doux Tarzans”. Due to the tropical climate there is no “best” season to see the gardens and they can be enjoyed all year round.
Listen to magical indigenous bird-songs from the Hen Harrier, Common Black Hawk, American Kestrel, Merlin and Humming Birds whilst walking through beautiful gardens set in shady woodlands. Your guide will be sure to show you the magic trick of calling the humming birds!
The plantation tour ends with a hike up the Lamontagne’s trail which offers breathtaking views of the Petit Piton and Sugar Beach from the mountain ridge. On this dense, humid rainforest trail you will get to see the giant tropical trees, palms and bamboo. Heliconia and Belisia produced striking flowers whilst the wild orchids cling to native trees. Giant ferns and also the Gwi-Gwi Tree are very prominent.
