Fond Doux Wins International Environmental Award

Saint Lucia Resort Named The America’s Best Sustainable Boutique Hotel
November 2, 2015

Fond Doux Plantation & Resort’s commitment to excellence and environmental stewardship has been recognized internationally as The America’s Best Sustainable Boutique Hotel. The announcement was made on October 30th, 2015 at the World Boutique Hotel Awards (WBHA) ceremony held at the Montcalm Hotel in London.

“We are deeply humbled to receive an award of such magnitude,” said Fond Doux co-owner Eroline Lamontagne. “We are committed to environmentally-friendly practices at our resort and are proud to make a positive impact. We have always known that Fond Doux is a world class property, and this award validates that feeling to a global community.”

Nominations for the WHBAs are made by an Awards Voting Jury comprised of 30 exceptionally well-travelled industry experts and luxury travel journalists. The WHBA panel reviewed more than 300 hotels before announcing Fond Doux Plantation & Resort as this year’s winner.

Set against the spectacular backdrop of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fond Doux Plantation & Resort has 15 idyllic cottages set in a tropical rainforest on one of the oldest working plantations in the Caribbean. The property boasts 30 kinds of fruit trees, as well as an abundance of local birds and wildlife. This historic 134 acre cocoa plantation has been called one of the top five plantation resorts in the world.

When Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne moved in over 20 years ago and began remodeling Fond Doux, they attempted to purge the soil of powerful chemicals used in the cultivation of bananas in the 80’s. This was accomplished by using organic farming methods and the systematic planting of cocoa, which is now the main crop, as well as a vast variety of fruits and flowers. Sustainable tourism activities at Fond Doux are guided by an environmental policy consistent with Green Globe Certification requirements.

“We’re proud that our commitment to excellence is being recognized by both guests and industry professionals,” said Fond Doux’s other owner Lyton Lamontagne. “We will continue to provide guests with a luxury boutique experience while celebrating our magnificent natural surroundings and adhering to strict sustainable practices that will keep them that way.”

The award comes just weeks after Fond Doux received a third straight Travel Weekly Magellan Award honoring the best in travel, and salutes the outstanding travel professionals behind the scenes.

This year Fond Doux also received a fourth consecutive Certificate of Excellence award from TripAdvisor.

2015 a Year of Accolades

New travel awards, designations, and ratings for Fond Doux

Twenty fifteen is proving to be an exciting year!

We have been so fortunate to earn an abundance of industry accolades, designations, awards, and certifications already this year. Fond Doux Plantation & Resort is truly having a banner year.

For the fourth time in as many years, both Fond Doux and our Jardin Cacao Restaurant have earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, recognizing that we have earned consistently wonderful reviews from travelers.

For the same reason we have also been granted the Award of Excellence from Guest Review Awards 2014.

But that’s not all! Fond Doux Plantation & Resort has also received a 3-star Diamond Rating from AAA, marking Fond Doux as one of the top hotels on this carefully curated list.

And finally, Fond Doux has also received Gold Level Status from the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Programme, recognizing our commitment to green practices and serving local organic good. We are the only hotel in Soufriere to receive gold level status, and we couldn’t be happier.

It has been an exciting first half of 2015, and we simply cannot wait to see how the rest of the year unfolds!

Leading Green with our Passion for Preservation

Fond Doux’s transformation from plantation to eco-friendly destination

It’s all about passion.

Fond Doux Plantation & Resort, a nineteenth century colonial plantation in the heart of Saint Lucia, is the only resort on the island that engages in true eco-building practices and cultural preservation.

You can spot evidence of passion and these practices all over the property, like the 100+ year old French Colonial wooden buildings that were each meticulously dismantled and transported to the resort grounds before being restored as guest accommodations. They stand as monuments to the rich colonial history of the area, nestled comfortably on the grounds of a working chocolate plantation.

Owners Lyton and Eroline Lamontagne ensure that Saint Lucia’s only true organic resort maintains a high standard of eco-friendly building practices and cultural preservation. This passion for preservation has led to Fond Doux earning both Green Globe certification and Gold Status in the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Programme in recognition of our commitment to green practices, local organic food, and efforts to make positive contributions both to people and the planet.

Our passion for local organic cuisine, for preservation of our history, and for eco-friendly practices are evident everywhere you look at Fond Doux.

This is our passion – and there is nothing we enjoy more than sharing it with the world :)

St Lucia’s Fond Doux Resort a Recipient of Traveler Love

2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2nd Time

Soufriere, ST LUCIA – Fresh on the launch of a brand new website, the historic Fond Doux Resort & Plantation in Soufriere, St. Lucia has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence award from TripAdvisor for the second consecutive year. This prestigious accolade from one of the world’s largest travel sites places the resort in the top-performing 10% of all businesses worldwide on TripAdvisor, and is only given to those who consistently earn high ratings from TripAdvisor travelers.

Situated on a 250 year old working plantation overlooking St. Lucia’s world-famous twin Pitons, the resort is surrounded by tropical rainforest with over 30 varieties of delicious fruit trees. The romantic and secluded hotel features elegant, restored colonial holiday villas, accented with white gingerbread and jalousie shutters. It also offers two onsite restaurants, an organic spa, catered weddings and romance packages, a collage of outdoor swimming pools, and the opportunity to watch cocoa dancers entice the taste of chocolate from Cacao beans.

Thankful for being blessed with “Le Plantation Fonddoux,” translated from French to mean “The Sweet Valley,” a delighted Eroline Lamontagne, general manager of the award-winning resort, was especially pleased with the TripAdvisor honor. “We thank the staff who have made it possible by their hard work, dedication, loyalty, and sacrifice. We especially thank all of the extended Fond Doux family and friends from around the globe who continue to keep us grounded with transformational advice and feedback.”

St Lucia itself was also recognized by TripAdvisor as one of the Top 10 Islands in the Caribbean, a distinction Mrs. Lamontagne would like to preserve for current and future generations. “We will continue to be advocates for sustainable tourism as we petition public officials for policies to keep our islands clean, garbage free, and healthy.”

Fond Doux Resort & Plantation’s highly coveted TripAdvisor award appears to endorse the resort’s unwavering support to combine agriculture, conservation, heritage, and tourism, though Mrs. Lamontagne was quick to point out that the resort “embraces being green not because it is fashionable, but because sustainable tourism is good for business, the environment, and the destination.”
